Vocabulary Parade at SMS

This is a fun way for students to learn at least 500 words that will benefit their reading and writing. The child can choose any vocabulary word and probably has done so already in English Language Arts class. The goal is that the costumes are as homemade as possible, so try to avoid purchasing or using an old Halloween costume. Remember, the purpose is to dress as a WORD, not a character. We encourage all students to participate and have even created awards to be given out. If students opt out, they will be required to do a writing assignment in place of participation. If students participate they will not be required to be in the school uniform. This year we are prohibiting clown costumes of any sort. Please wear as much as your costume as possible that is school appropriate-no leggings, no holes in jeans, shorts must be knee length, etc. Masks and face paint must be approved by your ELA teacher.
We are also not allowing students to dress as twins, excellence, or athletic, which were overdone last year. Teachers are working with students to be sure that different students do not choose the same word and may enact a rule with their students that once a word is chosen it cannot be chosen again.
Still stumped? Check out Pinterest or even Google images and search for “Vocabulary Parade Costumes”. There is a treasure trove of ideas already created and waiting for you to make your own.
This event will take place throughout the day on Friday, October 28th in the SMS auditorium. For more information or if you still have questions, contact your student’s English Language Arts teacher.
